Charles Eames Research

Lets look at Charlessssss (also in more depth)


  • Charles' High school career was distinguished.
  • He was president of the class, a track star abd captain of football, the class yearbook described him as "a man with ideals, courage to stand up for them and ability to live up to them"
  • Briefly studied architecture at Washington uni after 2 years he left
  • Whilst at uni met his first wife Catherine Woermann who he married in 1929, they had a daughter - Lucia Jenkins
  • In 1930, Charles began his own architectural practice in St. Louis 
  • Charles moved in 1938 with his wife Catherine and daughter Lucia to Michigan, to further study architecture at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, where he would become a teacher and head of the industrial design department.
  • with Eero Saarinen he designed prize-winning furniture for New York's Museum of Modern Art "Organic Design in Home Furnishings" competition.
  • Their work displayed the new technique of wood moulding that Eames would further develop in many moulded plywood products, including chairs and other furniture, splints and stretchers for the US Navy during World War II.
  • 1941 he divorced Catherine and married his collegue Ray.
  • They moved in together in Sacramento where they worked and lived until their deaths.
  • Charles died of a heart attack on August 21 1978.
